Interesting tip for iPhone Internet tethering

Just so set the scene :

- I have a iPhone 4 (Vodafone UK)

- And I have a Boingo mobile phone subscription on it (around £4/month)

I am currently sitting outside Starbucks - on my MacBook - connected to the Internet using tethering from the MacBook to the iPhone.

It looks remarkably like I can use the Boingo subscription on my iPhone to connect my MacBook to the Internet through the iPhones wireless (ie Starbucks) wifi netowrk.

One of the more positive improvements easily experienced with the iPad is iTunes syncing - I just timed a 1.3 Gb movie being transferred from my laptop to the iPad in 70 seconds - several times as fas as for the iPhone.

Streaming video from your server to the iPad

I just downloaded StreamToMe to my iPad to let me automatically transcode and stream videos from our video server (a mac mini) directly to the iPad - and it works (most of the time - unless it crashes).

It requires that you run a (free) application on the server - then the iPad will automatically discover all servers.

StreamToMe is an application for iPhone and iPod Touch that plays music and video files (in a wide variety of formats) streamed live from your Mac. If you connect the video-out cable for iPhone/iPod, StreamToMe can play through your TV, turning your iPhone/iPod plus Mac into a home media center.

My iPad needs some of this

When I bought the iPad I was in a hurry to catch a plane back to Europe - and obviously did not look closely enough after ordering a 32 gb iPad - so when i got back it turned out to be a 16 Gb version. And one thing I will need is more storage - so this is what I'm looking at :

I got some new headphones/earphones

For years I've used a set of ER6 earphones from Etymotic, and overall been reasonably satisfied.

On the negative side it's very hard to get a good enough fit to get decent bass from the earphones.

On the positive side the mechanical noise reduction (by getting them inserted properly into the ear) is fantastic, your fellow passengers on the train or plane can't hear what you are listening too - nor are you disturbed by them.

So this time around I went for the new Etymotic HF2 - with a twist, as I now have the option to get a set of custom earbuds made in Guildford (!) to get a perfect fit. But the earbuds cost the same as the HF2's - turning them into a set of very expensive earphones indeed.

Apple is now the single most profitable phone maker in the US, Strategy Analytics said today. Although it has just 2.5 percent share and makes just two similar iPhone models, Apple is estimated to have generated about $1.6 billion in operating profit from its cellphones in the summer where market leader Nokia said it had only generated $1.1 billion. A new Bluetooth headset

I'e used the original Jawbone Bluetooth headset for a long time, and have been a reasonably happy customer. The sound quality was good, and it worked with both my MacBook and my iPhone.

But it had 2 serious drawbacks :

- It could only connect to one of the devices at a time, you needed to fiddle around to switch between them.

- The earloops were difficult to get over the year, and I have broken all of them without applying excess pressure - and they (Jawbone) do not sell spares!

So I have a old and now largely useless original Jawbone - as I have no more earloops, and let wondering if I have strange shaped ears (-;.

Seeing that both The Student and at least one of my friends have broken the screens of their iPhones - and Apple Support have declared the phones "unrepairable" the following seems remarkably interesting :

Hm! I wonder if this research included any iPhone users? I'm reasonably sure noe of them found 3G hard to use.
